Hawaii (Big Island) 2019

PHOTOGRAPHY |  TRAVEL   Kailua-Kona, Hawaii A friend and I went to Hawaii for the first time in late April and we were there for a week. We stayed the first few nights at an Airbnb and then with a friend for the rest of our stay (both places were very close to downtown). The first two days we had a truck and drove to Hilo, which is on the other side of the island. We didn't have a lot of time with the truck so we couldn't go see everything (including the volcano), but there were lots to do even with a small budget. The whole trip cost under $1,000 CAD (including airfare), though we were really there to take a break from work and go beach hopping. I also really wanted to see some lava, but since we went a few months after the volcanic eruption, there weren't any active flows. One of the days with the truck, we went up Mauna Kea to see the sunset. Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world when you measure it from its underwater base. You need a 4x4 ve...

Israel 2020 - Day 3

The "Israel 2020" posts are day-by-day summaries of the trip taking place from February 23 to March 5, 2020.

Day 3 Tiberias and Ein Harod:

Tiberias is a city on the Sea of Galilee, which is the second lowest lake on Earth after the Dead Sea. The Sea of Galilee's main water source is the Jordan River. It is also the lake where Jesus supposedly walked on water. We stayed at the Leonardo Plaza Hotel with our rooms facing the water. In the morning, we visited the King Solomon Hotel to see the interesting modernist architecture.

After the visit to the hotel, we headed south to visit Kibbutz Ein Harod - the first large kibbutz in Israel. Within the Kibbut is the Mishkan Art Museum, which uses daylight to illuminate the space. It was overcast when we visited so the exhibition was lit using artificial lighting. Once we finished our visit to the museum, we had lunch at the Kibbutz's dining hall. It was like going to an IKEA cafeteria, where a worker serves you certain things, such as the meat, and you can help yourself to the sides before going to pay.

We drove back north to the Golan Heights, stopping at the Pelter Winery for a wine tasting. Our hotel for the night was the Hagoshrim Hotel & Nature which is run by a kibbutz. The hotel claims to be eco-friendly with recycling and energy saving systems in place. Unfortunately, we arrived late and had to leave early the next morning, leaving little time to explore.
