Hawaii (Big Island) 2019

PHOTOGRAPHY |  TRAVEL   Kailua-Kona, Hawaii A friend and I went to Hawaii for the first time in late April and we were there for a week. We stayed the first few nights at an Airbnb and then with a friend for the rest of our stay (both places were very close to downtown). The first two days we had a truck and drove to Hilo, which is on the other side of the island. We didn't have a lot of time with the truck so we couldn't go see everything (including the volcano), but there were lots to do even with a small budget. The whole trip cost under $1,000 CAD (including airfare), though we were really there to take a break from work and go beach hopping. I also really wanted to see some lava, but since we went a few months after the volcanic eruption, there weren't any active flows. One of the days with the truck, we went up Mauna Kea to see the sunset. Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world when you measure it from its underwater base. You need a 4x4 ve...

Israel 2020 - Day 4

The "Israel 2020" posts are day-by-day summaries of the trip taking place from February 23 to March 5, 2020.

Road up to Nimrod Fortress.

Day 4 The Golan Heights:

Most of day 4 was spent in the Golan Heights. The first stop was Nimrod Fortress National Park at the foot of Mt. Hermon. The drive was very short from the hotel, but once you enter the park gates the road gets very steep. Nimrod's Castle is the largest castle remaining in Israel from the Middle Ages and you can explore it using the short hiking loop. Additionally, you get an amazing panoramic view of the Golan Heights.

The second location that we visited was Mount Bental, which is south of Nimrod Fortress and away from Lebanon. Mount Bental is one of the dormant volcanoes in the Golan Heights separating Israel from Syria.

At the top is a cafe - Coffee Anan - and the old army bunkers from the battle during the Yom Kippur War. The site overlooks the Valley of Tears and UN peacekeepers monitor the demilitarized zone between Syria and Israel. Additionally, we could see a Syrian village very close to the border and fields of farmland.

Upon finishing our visit to Mount Bental, we visited the Elma Arts Complex Hotel then drove down to Jerusalem. We arrived in Jerusalem in the evening, so we checked-in at our hotel and went to Ben Yehuda Street for dinner.
